Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Medical Psychiatric Registered Nurse (Med/Psych RN) to join our multidisciplinary healthcare team. This role is responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals with co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical judgment, behavioral health experience, and the ability to manage complex patient needs in a fast-paced acute care environment.
As a Med/Psych RN, you will collaborate closely with physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver integrated care that addresses both physical and mental health needs while promoting patient safety and positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize the nursing process, critical thinking, and professional judgment to provide safe, effective patient care.
- Assess patients for both medical and psychiatric needs, including obtaining health histories, monitoring vital signs, and evaluating behavioral status.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans.
- Administer medications, including psychotropic medications and treatments for medical conditions.
- Monitor patient responses to treatment and modify care plans as appropriate.
- Provide crisis intervention and support during behavioral health emergencies.
- Promote a therapeutic environment while ensuring patient safety and managing challenging behaviors appropriately.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, physicians, social workers, psychologists, and interdisciplinary care teams.
- Educate patients and families regarding mental health diagnoses, treatment plans, medication management, and coping strategies.
- Advocate for patient access to appropriate medical, psychiatric, and community resources.
- Participate in patient rounds and interdisciplinary treatment planning meetings.
- Coordinate discharge planning and collaborate with patients, families, and care teams to ensure smooth transitions of care.
- Manage complex, high-acuity patients while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with regulatory, accreditation, and hospital standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing professional development.
- Complete unit-specific competencies and required continuing education.
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
- Active and unrestricted Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) License.
- Minimum 2–3 years of combined Med-Surg and Psychiatric Nursing experience.
- Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
- Current CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) Certification.
- Knowledge of psychotropic medications and their interactions with medical treatments.
- Ability to work day or night 12-hour shifts and variable schedules as needed.
- Ability to safely lift, transfer, and reposition patients when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or active enrollment in a BSN program.
- Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC).
- Previous experience in Medical Psychiatric, Behavioral Health, Med-Surg, or Telemetry environments.
